Welcome to Online Lessons
Here we have my Online Lesson series and some FREE stuff for your enjoyment. I have been very fortunate to recieve requests for lessons from many parts of the world. Since it's impossible to get to everyone, I created this section with lessons that I consider to be very important.

Lesson Plans and "Phil" - osophy :-)
There are many lessons about fills, beats and patterns out there. I wont be doing that since I believe beats, fills and patterns are only 1/2 the battle. Instead I try to focus on things that will give you the knowledge to use your skills in the most creative and musical way possible. I developed all these concepts on clinic tours and while teaching at some of the best music schools in the world, where they were proven "in action" to be most effective.

New Online lesson Video!! Soloing Concepts
For years now I have been getting lots of questions about soloing. How to solo. What makes a good solo. What is a "Musical" solo.... So here I am tackling these issues. This subject might merit a part 2 because its a huge topic. A great drummer can play great solos... but also bad solos. What makes a solo great? It is a question of musicianship more then chops. Chops need structure. They need a format. Like language has. Language has a massive amount of structure and rules! Drumming is a language. And to be in touch with the many aspects of soloing is like learning musical grammer. We have all heard the "Amazing Chops fest" that bored us to tears right? Well...the elements discussed here will help you avoid being the guy that does that!

NEW AND REVAMPED NOW AVAILABLE ON HUDSON MUSIC!!
Specialty Phrasing Series- Groups of 7 using 16th notes!!
In this video lesson we are going to learn how to use another very popular rhythmic concept. Using 16th notes in 4/4 we are learning to create phrasing by accenting notes broken up into groups of 7. This creates wonderful endless phrasing opportunities and can create the illusion that you are playing in "7". It might sound a bit complicated but its not. Its an extremely useful concept that all players use, and of course it can be taken across many genres of music. Rock, Funk, Jazz, Brazilian, Afro Cuban, Fusion etc etc. Once you understand how to use this concept you will have a never ending flow with this rhythmic motif! Comes with PDF notation - 31 min.

After lots of emails and questions about how to create vocabulary, I decided to start tackling the issue on video.
In this video lesson we are going to learn how to use a very popular rhythmic concept. Using 16th notes in 4/4 we are learning to create phrasing by accenting notes broken up into groups of 2 and 3. This creates the illusion that you are playing in "5". It might sound a bit complicated but its not.

Getting a Real Samba Feel!!
In this clip we are working on getting a proper feel for Samba. Although it is work on a particular genre, this can spill over into many other styles of Brazilian music. There is nothing nicer then to hear this beautiful style with the right flowing "Hump" on drums! With out the proper feel its very difficult to get nice grooves happening with the music.
Opening up your hearing and understanding the special rhythmic properties of Samba is the main theme here. And the way we do it is by applying RTS - My method for decoding the feel and phrasing of African descent music, to the Samba. Dancers will love you and you will have a blast with this!
Comes with PDF notation - 29 min.

The Rhythmic Pyramide in Jazz!
This very popular lesson now comes on video! It includes 15 pages of PDF files! And an audio version of the lesson. This is a favorite with everyone so i decided to put it on video for an even better lesson experience. If you love straight ahead jazz but have trouble playing at all tempo ranges, or would love to understand the vocabulary of greats like Bill Stewart, or would like get your playing to sound more open and flowing, this workshop is for you. One of the questions I get asked constantly is - How do I play loose and not stiff? And of course - How do I play really fast uptempo? I can tell you that technique is only a 1/4 of the battle. Check out this lesson and enjoy!!

Review from Master Drummer and Teacher Frank Briggs
"Phil's "The 3 in Jazz" workshop is very well done. I expected a short lesson, what I got was the equivalent of a small book. There is a wealth of info here. The examples are very well thought out and executed. More importantly it cleared up some things for me.... thanks Phil!!"

How to practice!!
Have you ever wondered exactly HOW to practice. Most of the time I see players just "wing it". But practicing is a life long endeavor and serious business. It cannot be left to chance. If it's disorganized you will suffer practice burn out, waste precious studio time that you might be paying for! And of course you could be wasting your own time!! If you are serious about practicing then you need a system that will organize your thoughts as well as your material.
Practicing for hours and hours will do little good if everything you do is random.
This is a system I designed for players with a heavy workload of subjects. Learn how to keep your mind in order as well as your schedule. A very important part of your formula that is often ignored. "How to practice" has been a hit with drummers across the world. Now the system is finally on a video.

New Way to study!!! ONLINE EVALUATIONS!!!!!!!
Due to the overwhelming demand from drummers asking me to review their clips on Youtube or check out the latest cd's, I have created this new service.

You must send me all links and material for review and I will send you all you need to know about your next steps, design exercises and/or recommend methods for you to follow. This a a new concept for communicating with drummers from all over the world and its like a virtual lesson.

Ahora!!

$5.00 US

Phil estudio tecnica de manos con los gurus de la tecnica en EEUU. Como Murray Spivak, Joe Porcaro, Richard Wilson, Rob Carson y hasta Jojo Mayer.

You've got to Funk a Drei!!
Develop the skill to phrase over the Barline.
Tired of sounding flat? Tired of your ideas and licks? There is a way to expand your vocabulary right away! Through the study of Rhythm! In this lesson we are learning to open up your phrasing and achieve what some of my Students refer to as a "rolling time feel"- More commonly known as playing over the barline.
Rhythm is like a kaleidoscope. When you turn the Kaleidoscope it makes different shapes. Think of rhythm as the shapes you see in the kaleidoscope. As you turn your perspective rhythmically, different cyclic melodies will appear. Rhythmic perspective will determine what melody you are hearing in any cycle. In this case I chose what I call the "3 bar cycle" - This "rhythmic melody" if you will, is pervasive in western drumming culture. Check out this lesson and enjoy!!
